A water test report lists many parameters. Here is what the common ones mean.

  • pH: how acidic or alkaline the water is. IS 10500 gives an acceptable range of 6.5 to 8.5.
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS): the amount of dissolved minerals and salts, which affects taste.
  • Turbidity: cloudiness caused by suspended particles.
  • Total hardness: mainly calcium and magnesium; relevant for scaling and soap use.
  • Iron: causes staining and taste problems.
  • Chloride: can indicate salinity or contamination and affects taste.
  • Total coliforms and E. coli: indicator organisms for microbiological safety. Drinking water should not show them in a 100 mL sample.

The parameters tested depend on the scope you request. Limits are published in IS 10500, so always refer to its latest edition and amendments.
